Portrait of the Artist as Filipino at Ilustrado

ILUSTRADO in Intramuros for the celebration of its 22^nd anniversary will present the best of Filipinos plays “Portrait of the Artist as Filipino” by National Artist Nick Joaquin in cooperation with the Philippine Drama Company Sala Theater, The cast is led by the iconic Naty Crame Rogers who plays the lead role of Candida Marasigan. Paula Marasigan will be played by Lala Castillo.

“Portrait…” deals with the ever pervading theme of our search for Filipino identity. It depicts the tragedy of two spinster sisters living in the Spanish City of Intramuros, “the old Manila” just before World War II in the early thirties and forties-who are slowly being devoured by the new commercialism and pragmatism that has marked the American regime but who stubbornly cling to the genteel though impractical world of Hispanized culture; with its battle-cry of “contra mundum” against worldliness and materialism, the play is a reminder of our gentlier heritage and our spirituality. It is most of all a play for October because it is dedicated to the Virhen de la Naval, Queen of the Holy Rosary, the great Feast of Intramuros when the Ilustrados would say “A La Gran Señora de Filipinas en su gloriosa Fiesta de su Naval.

The play will be presented as Theater-Dinner on October 22 (Saturday) and 28 (Friday), 2011. Cocktails at 6:00 pm, Curtain at 7:00 pm and dinner follows shortly after. A technical dress rehearsal on October 21, 2011 at 3:00pm will be open for viewing. The evening’s menu lineup is of Spanish-Filipino heritage as well highlighted by Ilustrado famous Paella Ilustrado accompanied by Callos Madrilena, Roasted Chicken ala Naranja, Bonoan Bangus Relleno.
